Restored Rural Romance. "I Took My Time."

Burlap Luxe Home Designs

Painted by Dore Callaway (Me)

A restored antique Century furniture chest I acquired from a local thrift shop.
I stripped it down to it's rawness so I could see the beauty it is. I loved the
lines, and its centuries-old charm. The top cabinet is married to the side-
board chest.

The less then generous fit with the cabinet leaves space on each end to
catch rustic's that land.

I added new hardware glass knobs aged with crusty homemade plaster paint.
Knobs (Lowes)

The Cabinet

The cabinet is a seperate piece purchased from another local thrift for $30.00
It belonged to another piece, and it being seperated was my good fortune.
The cabinet had glass shelving, and I added aged wood shelves;
the backing was flimsy so I added bead board backing to a piece of plywood
that would allow me to hang someday if desired.

I painted the cabinet to blend seamlessly with the side-board chest I painted
2 years ago; giving it a lime washed finish.

I am so pleased with the mixing of two seperate antiques pieces inspiring one
rural rustic piece.

It now sits in my home studio office where my art and designs take place.
I love the accumulation of things it can hold, and the life I gave these two
old castoffs.

I added a bit of black paint washed into the wood grain giving it an old
world finish; it adds to its aged feel and look.

A rubbed off finish to the wear of its paint finish.
Even the hardware received a bit of paint aging.

I love entering this room that inspires the art and designs I create.

gorgeous! I just love everything about it. I love the way you stripped it down to its bare beauty and gave it the most beautiful finish. The styling is wonderful. It is such an interesting piece now. You've inspired me to go and paint some furniture. I hope you are enjoying this gorgeous summer. Have you started with your kitchen cabinets yet? I am dreaming of a kitchen with white washed wood floor like yours and cabinets and open shelves painted like this with gorgeous white china.

Doré, you did magic. And the idea with the knobs and the black is simpli gorgeous. It took its time, of course! An now there is your reward: A perfect background, a setting, unique and full of your energy. It is like a fuel station now, isn´t it. Gives back your energy a thousend times more powerful.

BOnjour mon amie! This is brilliant. I've seen several cabinets like this that I'm sure will begin to be even more popular as people see what can be done with them! Your painting is a masterful way of wisely recycling and restoring a piece that will now give more pleasure, instead of going out to buy something that in my opinion, would have no heart. But this piece now has a history - what it once was to someone else, and what it went through in YOUR HANDS. The loving massage of sanding and painting has made this a masterpiece.

Have another fun day of dreaming of beautiful things! (I hope you are well!) Anita

I love that I can click on each photo and see everything up close. The black gives the piece added emphasis and another layer of history. Everything ~ as always ~ is gorgeous, Dore!

I am just now getting around to painting my baker's rack. It's outdoors because the paint smell is so strong. Perhaps Mother Nature will add a few of her own touches to it! :)

Have a beautiful day, dear friend!
Hugs,
Lin

Wow Dore, your cabinet is beyond beautiful! I can't even begin to imagine what you'd pay for something like that in a shop...probably in the $1,000's easily. Love the beadboard you added to the back too!

Hello Dore!

What a lovely, lovely piece. I especially like how the top cabinet is slightly wider than the drawers below it - gives it a fun and unique look. And of course, you accessorize it perfectly. I hope all is well with you and know that you are often in my thoughts.

Big hugs always

Doré,
I'm back to revisit your amazing achievement. I love how you played with scale! Seeing the possibility of making the two different pieces reflect your aesthetic and masterfully worked your painting techniques to capture your vision.
It bounces off the darker floor and enriches your rural tonal whiteness chic. I am happy to see black rubbed in as I think it enhances softy the different layers of richness.
I appreciate and value your commitment in your passions and you enable us to dream and attempt to succeed in our own DIY furniture projects.
My brother is spending a long weekend with us and I've been knee deep in projects and trying to finish on time, work commitments. I guess I took my own advice to refocus and redirect my efforts and have been hectically/frantically trying to complete things.
I always find a visit to Burlap Luxe a time to soak in beauty and relax, thank you mon amie.
XOXO,
Vera

what a beautiful marriage you have arranged here. i always find inspiration and aha moments when i pop over. for example, the switch out of the glass for the wood. oui. oui. i need to follow suit as i have always wanted to do this to my hutch. a project like that can seem daunting for me and so i wait and wait. but you and i both know it will be an amazing improvement. bravo on the finish you have achieved here. timeworn. hushed. lyrical even. how i would love to see your pieces in person. soon i will buy some of your art to make that dream come true. love to you, dore.

Dear Dore,
First, I think it is impossible for you to create anything that is less than masterful.. You have a sense of personal style that is pure ~class~ and your gentle soul is visible in every piece..

It was such a joy to see you had come to meet little Abby... I understand your feelings about wanting a wee goat.. If I were on a farm, watch out.. I would need to have one of everything I believe.
Take care, sending you a big hug!

Oh WOW Dore,
That looks AMAZING ….. and, I probably would never have thought to do that but, it's great to have the sides to display things. A brilliant idea and one that we can all do. Just have to find the furniture first !!!! I love the way that you've aged it too. That's such a good idea to add the black paint. I'm going to do that to a couple of my pieces ….. I'm always painting furniture and distressing it.
….. and, many thanks for your lovely comment today. XXXX
