The French Attitude Towards Redecorating

All photos Doré Callaway BurlapLuxe Home

The French attitude towards redecorating is relaxed. It's the distressed and peeling paint on everything from their homes to their furnishings showing off the imperfections that have taken on a little too much love.

Mirrors

Casting a reflection of smoky greyness with a softness of old when pieces get in its way.

Vignettes take on a dusky shadowing with depth and soul.

Vintage Mahogany and Zinc French Address Plaques....
In my etsy shop!

Pottery

French pottery stacked high or standing alone. A slightly unevenness to this hand tossed
French "beurre" butter dish charms with village artistry; Less then sophisticated.
The artist does not know how treasured this piece is to me and how its rustic imperfections add.

Subtle and Harmonious

Simple pieces ease their way into my home.

Dramtically tarnished candlestick anchors the tone on tone.

French Chest Of Drawers

French chest taken from its natural raw finish to white with a hue of an undertone of grey to it; I painted and distressed.
I carefully thought this one out as to leave it in the natural or give it a paint technique that looked well lived; A finish that does not compete for attention with other pieces in the room.

An artist lives here and creates here.
Vintage 50-75 year old ox-hair paint brushes also can be found in my etsy shop.

"Joie de vintage"
I love the way my grandfathers studio brushes now rest in my hand and paint as he did.

Your home is stunning Dore! I just low your decorating style. If I could wave a magic wand and make those funds appear, I would do my home just like yours. ha! But I do enjoy and love the little touches that I am able to do here and there in my own home. LOVE that plaque I purchased from you!!! Happy weekend. :)

Absolutement ravissant ma belle!

My darling Doré, you know how I feel about your style, the French way....there is a richness about how the French live with chippy paint, a distressed piece, an rumpled old couch....it IS an attitude.

I have been redecorating as well, living with the essentials that I find to be worn but not TORN, gray but not dismal, old but not out-dated. You capture it, and the essence is peace.

I am asking permission to "pin" one of these gorgeous photos onto my Pinterest board...may I? I understand if you prefer not to. Just let me know, OUI ou NON!

There is such a deeply rooted richness to your design in your home. It flows and it anchors, as you said. Meaningful treasures blend with your freshly restored furniture pieces. One of a kind decorating that I simply adore.

Dore...I love your French stories...I always save them for morning coffee, a lunchtime escape at the office...or the very best time...in bed with a big bouquet of lavender and a goblet filled with chilled water at my bedside.

One of my favorite things about French decorating is the use of soft gray. The color has the ability to keep a room classy but with an inviting warmth.

Ma belle,

How lovely it is to see you anytime of the season, because our kindred grays and whites and French sensibilities always mesh together to create a palate of colorful possibilities. Thank you for coming to visit me! It is rather gray and cool here today! Be well ma chère, Anita

WE are definitely soul sisters...today is an exceptional day in that it is cooler than usual, rain, gray and YUMMY. I am sitting in my gray studio, and I am over joyed. What is it my dear about GRAY that makes us HAPPY???????? All I know is that it is wonderful to know someone who sees the colors of joy in gray. Anita

Merci Dore for your words this morning. I am joyfully anticipate the journey my Holly is beginning. It has been nice to see how much she is torn to leave her life here at home but I k ow she will love university life and come back to visit often with lots of stories to share. She got into all her classes at UCB and just found a room to rent this week! It's all falling into place for her. It is still a strange thing to have your children grow up and leave. I find courage in Karen blixon who ran a farm in Africa by herself. Oxox

You are such a master of paint finishes. Your hand is so subtle in just the right way, and your eye really "gets" what a piece needs to bring it to life... Love the simple rounded top mirror too.
