"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful,
or believe to be beautiful."
~William Morris
Burlap Luxe is a compulsive business not like local
furniture stores, it's the hunt for history or creating it. My latest creations designed and built by me (Dore) These new pieces have added the right kind of rightness to my shop space
where rustic does not stand in the way of beauty. Pictured here is my latest French
dinning table and a coffee table as well as two side tables one of my older pieces that I
featured in an older posting built for my daughter Hannah's room and her need for rustic
beauty.
In the course of my designing and paint treatments I have eliminated colour and what I was left with was the pale of what sits between black and white leaving one with the choice of greys, and shades of whites that soulfully live with us. I make sure that what I use in a piece is gathered and collected of salvaged giving each piece an after life.
I live with pieces that bring something to the life of a home, every piece has a story, and I hear, and see the story in each piece even before it tells me it's own version.
If a piece does not find you, then build it sturdy, and solid.
Your shop is enchanting, as are your words. I adore that you create new life out of throw aways, and then make them beautiful and useful. I love that you listen to the pieces you make as you create them. It all shows in your charming shop. Even the cages on the wall, look like art...

Hello dearest Dore! First off, your shop looks so rich in beauty and history, something I feel should go hand in hand more times than not and it appears you capture that 'feeling' wonderfully...On another note, thank you for your kind words on my pregnancy and I would love to hear some ideas on baby names, I have been searching for names that honor my heritage, not saying that it is an absolute must, but would be nice, my other three children favor their Dad's heritage :) I am Irish, Norwegian, German and Cherokee, but I cannot seem to find an American-Indian name that I like....Anyhow, let me know if you come up with some special names =) Xo, Ashley
ReplyDeletea great look and a great philosophy Dore...hope you have been well

BONJOUR MA BELLE!
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time, I believe, that I have ever seen your shop and ALL or most of your masterpieces together! This is exciting and I am thrilled to know you are thriving.
I can see that you choose only the sturdiest of pieces and then transform them.....it is hard to resist creating something, isn't it?
BRAVO MY DEAR, you have created beauty. Anita
This is a perfect combination of what I have come to call "Refined Rustic." It has a great texture, without being harsh. It has personality, without being "too much." It has a softness and stillness, without it being bland. And it all makes me want to reach out and touch it. I just love it and no wonder others do too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing such great talent.
Love
and big hugs
Elizabeth
Dear Dore,
ReplyDeleteYour shop is just what I imagined.

Penny

My heart is singing.. Thank you for the beautiful words you left for me.. I am thrilled that you and Hannah have found a place in your heart for little Joy, who was needle felted with your gift of beautiful wool... A new lamb for new memories, and yes, maybe one day to pass on.. Would'nt that be wonderful...
ReplyDeleteMy heartfelt thanks for your generosity and kindness. Your gift of wool will allow me to do what I love.. Create and I hope spread a little happiness.
Bisous!
Penny
Your latest creations are just fab. I see a great assortment of furniture there. Thanks for sharing your talent with us!
ReplyDeleteHave a great Sunday :)

I can just see a large game terrine in the middle of that table, surrounded by ripe figs. What a setting to break bread.
ReplyDeleteOh Doré, can you imagine the ideas EN FRANÇAIS, that we could come up with for paper theatre ideas??? I am going to be working on my next week's blog post featuring my latest pieces, but with a little twist....I hope it comes out the way I envision it....
ReplyDeleteYES! I REMEMBER THOSE PAPER CHAINS! I like to think that my love for this simple yet versatile material started when ALL WE HAD around the house WAS paper bags...no money for much else in terms of art supplies. To this day, my sensibilities come from a sense of frugality but I think that many an artist can make something beautiful from almost nothing.....create, CREATE MON AMIE and thank you SO MUCH for coming today! Anita
P.S., I just bought the most adorable item from Penny.....it has a bit of YOU woven into it....I cannot wait to get it! Anita
ReplyDeleteDore ~ I think that this is the first time I've seen inside of your shop. How incredibly beautiful! It just speaks YOU all through it! You have styled it to perfection and your vignettes are stunning. I showed my husband your farmhouse table and asked him to make one for me. Would you share with me how you made yours? :) Hugs to you, my talented friend!

Lovely space. The new pieces echo your style so beautifully. I am in love with both the farm table & coffee table. I agree with you about building sturdy what you cannot find. Thinking of you.
ReplyDeletelove,
Jami
Your shop is, in itself, a work of art! Absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
Your shop looks amazing Dore! I wish I could snap my fingers and be in there to do some shopping:) You work magic with pieces of wood!
ReplyDeleteI saw something on Pinterest, that if you rub apple cider vinegar on a new piece of wood, with steel wool, it will give it an aged look. I painted my dining table base pale grey so I may try this for the top!
I am so excited to peek in your space Dore! You are so inspiring ~ your creations are just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteoh Dore, such wonderful pieces! I can almost smell the wild flowers along the French countryside! I can taste the cheese, and the wine..you have transported me once again. I love all of the imperfections you bring to the forefront, making each piece absolutely perfect! have a great week, xoxox Christel
ReplyDeleteHello Dore,

ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful to see there is life for cast-offs that will be functional once again!

Great display photos. Thank you for the perfect inspiration for a sideboard I am refinishing this weekend in muted, weathered gray tones.
ReplyDeleteSuch talent - the passion for your work is evident in your creations and shop. Furniture with history is my preferred choice when decorating a house. Bisous
ReplyDeletePrecious Doré,
ReplyDeleteHOW WONDERFUL to see your comment last night; I am barely getting back to my responses now, for I have spent the morning down in my basement creating a lifesize mannequin for my very first show here in Minneapolis. It will be a ballet tutu in GRAY with lots of feathery paper for the tutu. It is wonderful.
Your kind friendship is always uplifting and I so appreciate every word you share. What fantastic work are you working on now? ENJOY YOURSELF MY DEAR! Anita
